No Minus-One And No PTI Without Imran, Says Tareen

Even as the Opposition's calls for a “minus one” formula to be implemented have grown stronger, the ruling party's senior leadership have come out to reject such demands. Senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Jahangir Tareen took the lead in rejecting such calls for an “in-house” change from Opposition figures.

Jahangir Tareen took the view that no one could think of such a formula being implemented. In his statement issued on Sunday in the wake of government figures' meeting with the Chaudhry brothers of the PML-Q, Tareen stated that the PTI had come into existence due to Prime Minister Imran Khan and that this made it unthinkable to remove him from the governing configuration.

Tareen was responding to talk of an “in-house” change that gained ground as opposition figures from the PML-N met in London. PML-N leaders were deliberating over the situation in the aftermath of the court's decision that the government introduce legislation for extending the army chief’s tenure. Such legislation might require the support of the opposition.

In his comments, Tareen said that the parliament has full authority for legislation and that the government will approve a law on the army chief's tenure after achieving consensus with the opposition at a suitable time.
