Complaint Filed Against Indian Students For Singing Faiz’s ‘Hum Dekhainge’ In CAA Protests

A complaint was filed against students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) who sang a poem of Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

According to a report in Al-Jazeera, a professor of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in UP filed a complaint with the university against some students for ‘spreading hate’. The students had sung Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s ‘Hum Dekhainge’ during the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The professor stated to media that the poem calls for the removal of idols and says that only Allah's name will remain at the end.

Indian journalist Swati Goel Sharma stated that a faculty member at IIT Kanpur had submitted this video and a complaint to the director of the university, alleging that anti-India and communal statements were made at a recent event held in solidarity with Jamia Millia Islamia university.

Faiz Ahmed Faiz wrote Hum Dekhainge during the time of former dictator Zia-ul Haq. Faiz’s poetry faced a ban during the dictator’s regime, a ban that was defied by famous singer, Iqbal Bano, who sang the poem in 1986 in front of a crowd in Lahore.

Indian students protesting against the CAA have also used Habib Jalib’s poem ‘Dastoor’ during their mobilisation against the controversial citizenship act.
