Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) chief Akhtar Mengal has warned the government that his party would leave the ruling alliance of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf if the four women who had recently been arrested from Awaran were not released.
While addressing the National Assembly on Friday, the BNP-M chief said that this would not be the first time for the party to quit the ruling alliance. “We will not compromise when it comes to our dignity,” he said.
He further stated that dictators had failed in the past when they tried to run Balochistan at gunpoint, adding that the present government would not be able to do so either.
Akhtar Mengal’s speech was followed by a token sit-in in front of the National Assembly speaker’s dais by lawmakers from BNP-M and the tribal districts, who then staged a walkout from the assembly.
Following the speech, former Pakistan Peoples Party senator took to Twitter to lend support to Akhtar Mengal’s demands. He added that Balochistan cannot be governed by making men and women disappear or through strong arm tactics.

The BNP-M chief’s speech comes days after four Baloch women were arrested from different parts of Awaran. It had later come to light that two of the women had been hospitalised in a critical condition as a result of inhuman treatment and severe torture in custody.
