Student unions in Pakistan were banned in 1984. The violence that took place during the 90s was actually a result of this ban since there were no democratic checks on these groups and state, on the other hand, made it easier for these bandits masquerading as students to acquire weapons. The ban didn’t help curb violence. But this depoloiticization certainly helped arrest the growth of political consciousness among the students.
