Students from across the country will be taking to the streets on November 29 to carry out the Students Solidarity March to demand greater rights and an academic environment conducive to critical thinking and political engagement. The student bodies behind the march have put forward the following demands.
The first and foremost demand of the Students Solidarity March is that the ban on student unions should be lifted and countrywide elections for student unions should be held. Students should be included in policy making by educational institutes. Moreover, students have also put forth the demand that they be given access to the budgets and audit reports of their universities.
Students have also demanded that the practice of making students sign a declaration barring them from engaging in any political activities should be ended and that freedom of speech should be enabled on campus.
Another major demand put forward by students is that committees pertaining to sexual harassment should be constituted, and that students be given representation in those committees.
Moreover, the privatisation of educational institutes should be stopped and the recent increase in tuition fees should be reverse.
Students have also demanded that Article 25A of the constitution should be implemented and all educational institutes should impart free education.
Moreover, five percent of the GDP should be allocated to primary and secondary education, and one percent should be allocated for higher education.
Students have also called an for an end to security forces’ interference in educational institutes and that all detained student activists should be released.
