Amid Fears Of Data Leak, PTI Considers Social Media Ban In Govt Offices
The ruling government of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is deliberating over a proposal to place a ban on social media sites, communication networks and applications in government offices amid fears that important data might be leaked.

According to a report in Express Tribune, the plan also proposes the banning of storage devices like USBs to offices. The imposition of a ban on social networking applications has been recommended by the National Information Technology Board (NITB).

As a replacement of the existing social media tools, a new communication system patterned on WhatsApp, ‘Govt App’, would be introduced for employees of the federal government to store data in. This would effectively mean that government officers would be banned from using social media during working hours.

The plans were revealed during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication.

The committee was also informed that the government was working to stop fake news on social media and was currently developing a framework to issue authentic government news on social media.
