The family of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senior Vice President Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has said that he is being kept under inhumane conditions in solitary confinement and his incarceration is in violation of basic human rights. The former PM’s family has said that he is being kept in a cell reserved for death-row inmates.

Abbasi has been in Adiala prison for one month under judicial remand and is suffering from various health problems, which his family attributes to a lack of care by the administration of the prison.

He was produced before the court today and his judicial remand was extended till November 19. He is under arrest in a case related to awarding of a Liquefied Natural Gas import contract.

During the hearing, a senior PML-N leader requested the court to allow Shahid Khaqan to get his surgery done from a hospital of his own choice. Abbasi has already underwent two serious surgeries recently.

Family sources have stated that jail doctors have made the recommendation that Abbasi should have two further surgeries as his health is deteriorating swiftly, but the authorities have been ‘criminally ignoring’ his health issues. The former PM is also being denied visitors.

Moreover, the medical board has advised that Abbasi should be provided home-cooked food under prison rules as he was an under-trial detainee.

Five weeks ago, in reference to the state of the country and its courts, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had stated during his hearing, "It has become a banana republic. I am telling the court that there is no justice in these courts."

Since then, the former premier has been kept in prison in conditions that could be termed a violation of human rights.

During his hearing today, Abbasi requested the court that his trial should be broadcast live. In an apparently sarcastic comment, the PML-N leader stated, “I want entire Pakistan to see how corrupt their representatives are.”
