The other day I was watching a video in which Adviser to PM on Interior Shehryar Afridi was seen giving lame justifications multiple times in response to anchors’ questions about the charges against Pakistan Muslim League – N (PML-N) leader Rana Sanaullah. Sanaullah is currently in jail under charges of drugs possession. The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) had taken the former Punjab law minister into custody and claimed to have seized 15 KGs of heroin from his car. Sanaullah has denied the charges.
The ANF has presented no evidence/video to prove that such a recovery was made. Usually when drugs are recovered in this manner, the authorities release pictures and/or videos of the items recovered.

But this has not happened in the Rana Sanaullah case so far. This indicates that the arrest is a part of witch-hunt unleashed by the current government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) against the opposition parties.
Rana Sanaullah has been one of the harshest critics of the PTI government, so it is understandable that they would arrest him under trumped up charges. And no, I am not saying this because I support the PML-N. But this is something every neutral person who knows the political culture in Pakistan would understand.
And one aspect of this absurd ‘accountability’ mantra that I find ironic is that it has ended up making heroes out of villains.

I have never been a fan of Rana Sanaullah or his politics. His involvement in the Model Town killings of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) workers in 2014 is common knowledge. Moreover, his alleged links with banned sectarian outfits and his act of forming electoral alliances with them was another reason why I disliked him.
And it’s not just me, but the general perception about Sanaullah is the same. He has never been a popular politicians or someone young people would look up to.
Yet, I, a young political observer, have no choice but to support him because I know he is being wronged by the so-called accountability champions. His wrongful arrest has ended up making him a symbol of rebellion - because it is being said that he was victimised by the PTI government due to his criticism of PM Imran Khan.
I hope he is released soon and the charges are dropped because such witch-hunt is an insult to the political process and democracy. This is what PTI's so-called accountability drive is doing: making heroes out of villains.
