The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is considering the setting of a weight limit for schoolbags as the provincial education department has drafted a bill in this regard, which will be tabled in the assembly soon.
A bench of the Peshawar High Court was told by the Additional Advocate General (AAG) Syed Sikandar Hayat Shah that the law department had examined the proposed legislation. The legislation would be tabled in the provincial assembly after the cabinet’s approval.
A copy of the proposed law was also shown to the bench. A deputy secretary of one of the sub-departments of the KP Education Department stated that the government was aiming for the early approval and enforcement of the bill.
The bench was hearing a petition in which it had been argued that heavy schoobags affected both the mental and physical health of students. The petitioner had sought a court order which would direct the government to set a weight limit considering the age and weight of students.
The petitioner had backed his argument with different research studies which stated that it would be appropriate to fix the maximum weight of school bags at less than 10 percent of the child’s weight.
During the hearing of the petition, the AAG informed the bench that the government had set separate weight limits for each class in the draft legislation. He added that the maximum permissible weight limit would be six or seven kilogrammes.
