The government has decided to keep open a ‘channel of dialogue’ with Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who is set to march on the federal capital at the end of October.
According to a report in Dawn, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday had asked his political aides to keep the option of dialogue open with the JUI-F chief during a meeting with government’s spokespersons at the Prime Minister Office (PMO).
A spokesperson for the prime minister informed media that a proposal was made by the government to reach out to Maulana Fazlur Rehman in order to know of JUI-F’s demands so as to prevent a deadlock.
Moreover, a decision to not stop the 'Azadi march' and the sit-in was also made. However, it was also decided that protesters would be dealt with in a stern manner if they disturbed law and order.
The spokesperson said that the prime minister was of the view that there was no issue in reaching out to the JUI-F chief but he was also aware that Maulana Fazlur Rehman was ‘toeing the line’ of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Pakistan People’s Party.
It was also observed during the meeting that PPP and PML-N had reached a point where they were forced to seek help of smaller parties.
The meeting also discussed that the JUI-F chief had employed different cards on various occasions but this time he was using the religion card. The participants of the meeting expressed hope that Maulana’s plan this time would be his ‘waterloo’.
Maulana Fazl will reveal the next plan of action after he reaches Islamabad. With thousands of students of seminaries taking part in the protest, the protesters can possibly give a tough time to the government.
