The physical remand of Captain (r) Muhammad Safdar was denied by a judicial magistrate on Tuesday, and he was sent on judicial remand for 14 days.
Captain Safdar had been arrested on Tuesday morning in a case of alleged hate speech when he was on his way from Bhera to Lahore.
He was presented before a magistrate in the evening by Islampura police.
The magistrate was informed by a deputy district prosecutor that Safdar had been charged with inciting people against state institutions and the government. The deputy prosecutor added that Safdar had been arrested following an order issued by Lahore deputy commissioner.
He added that police needed 14-day physical remand of the suspect for investigation.
Safdar’s advocate argued before the magistrate that the police acted with mala fide intention, and stated that police initially lodged an FIR under Maintenance of Public Order and later inserted section of Pakistan Penal Code. He added that this was a case of political victimisation.
The magistrate denied the request of the police and sent Captain Safdar to jail on judicial remand.
