SC Grants Bail To PTM Leader
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday granted bail to Alamzeb Mehsud, a rights activists and leader of the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM).

A three-member bench of the SC, headed by Justice Maqbool Baqar, granted bail to Mehsud against a surety bond of Rs500,000.

The PTM leader had been in custody since January 21 after his arrest from Karachi on charges of rioting and inciting hatred at a protest near Sohrab Goth.

During the hearing, the court asked Mehsud’s counsel whether a forensic audit had been conducted of a video that allegedly shows the rights activist delivering an anti-state and anti-military speech.

The lawyer informed the court that no such video exists according to his knowledge. He also said that no date for his client’s trial had been fixed yet. Later, the court decided to grant bail to Mehsud by announcing its verdict in his favour.

The activist had addressed a PTM rally in Karachi on January 20. The next day, a case was registered against 16 PTM leaders and 200 workers on behalf of the state for allegedly using provocative language against state institutions.

It merits mention here that member of National Assembly Ali Wazir was also named in the police report.
