Karachi Should Be Made Federal Capital Again: Siraj Durrani
KARACHI: Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani said on Saturday that Karachi should be made the federal capital again as was the case when Pakistan came into being.

Speaking to media persons outside an accountability court, he said that Article 149 is meant to only provide direction to the provincial government.

Earlier, Federal Law and Justice Minister Farogh Naseem clarified that he had never issued a statement saying that the port city should be made into a separate province and that his words were taken out of context.

On Friday, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureishi while addressing a National Assembly session had assured legislators from Sindh that the federal government respected the constitution, while clarifying that the law minister’s statement that the centre was contemplating a takeover of Karachi’s administrative affairs was taken out of context.

“We respect the constitution, have always done so and will do in the future as well. Sindh is an integral part of Pakistan and we will not damage provincial autonomy in any manner,” the foreign minister had said.
