Eight Die Of Electrocution After Heavy Rain Lashes Port City
KARACHI: At least eight have been killed in rain-related incidents in the provincial metropolis on Saturday.

Per details, two people from the city’s SITE area died due to electrocution while other deaths were reported from Orangi and Hijrat areas of the port city.

Heavy rains lashed the city on Friday and disrupted daily life while also leaving many thoroughfares flooded. Electricity supply to main localities in the city also remained suspended.

The weather in the city changed pleasant after the rains, but people had to face inconvenience due to flooded roads and regular power cuts.

Moreover, around 350 feeders of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) tripped, after which power remained suspended in Azizabad, New Karachi, North Nazimabad, Gulistan-e-Johar and other areas.

The recent rains exposed the weak precautionary measures of the authorities concerned during the first one-day international cricket match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at the National Stadium, which was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Pakistan Meteorological Department Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfraz, while terming the recent spell of monsoon rains in the city as extraordinary, said that around 130mm of rain has been recorded in the city during the past few weeks only.

Last month’s torrential rains and urban flooding killed at least 12 people in the port city, while seriously disrupting life in the metropolis.

Main thoroughfares remained submerged under several feet of rainwater as drains and canals in the city continued to overflow. Flooding was also witnessed in low-lying areas of the city.
