The extension of the Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has received criticism from legal quarters as the Pakistan Bar Council Vice Chairman Syed Amjad Shah has said that it is not a good step.

The statement is crucial for the government and the army chief as it is coming from the highest body of lawyers in the country. The Vice Chairman has reprimanded the government by saying that every government makes claims about upholding the law and strengthening the institutions, but every time it does the opposite of its claims.

Shah claimed that the extension is against national interests and is tantamount to weakening the institution of armed forces. He stated, “Only strong institutions can put a country on road to progress, strong individuals tend to exploit the very existence of an institution.”

In the statement issued by the PBC, the vice chairman also added, “It is, therefore, imperative and in the national interest as well as for ensuring good governance and strengthening the institutions including the institution of armed forces that the government should withdraw the decision of giving an extension to army chief and instead should appoint a new army chief on principle of seniority and merit.”

The statement has been criticized by some journalists who are of the view that the bar council does not need to drag itself into this debate. On the other hand, the statement has also received support from some journalists and politicians, with journalist Ahmed Noorani even calling for Supreme Court to take up the issue.

Moreover, senior Pakistan People’s Party politician Farhatullah Babar has heaped praise at PBC for taking a ‘principled position’ on the matter.
