In a new development, two women are running for polls in erstwhile FATA. The elections are scheduled for July 20 where the said residents of erstwhile FATA will vote for the first time as part of the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

It is pertained to mention here that the said polls are for 16 constituencies where a majority of the contenders are male apart from two females.

The two candidates include Naheed Afridi from the Awami National Party (ANP). Afridi is hoping for a win in the conservative Khyber district’s constituency of PK 106. There are a total of 148,470 voters in this constituency, of which 65,652 (44 percent) are female reports Geo News.

The other woman is Malasa Bibi, who belongs to Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) for PK 109 in the Kurram district. In her constituency, there are 187,844 voters in all, of which 82,560 are women as per a report by Geo News.
The said areas are known as extremely conservative due to tribal culture and have undergone severe militancy for years. In a country where women abstain from General polling even in an urban setting, these two are defying all odds by doing the same in erstwhile FATA.
