Islamabad: Chairman Federal Board of Revenue may be elevated to the position of Prime Minister`s Aide on Revenue since the position fell vacant after the newly promoted federal minister, Hammad Azhar was given Economic Affairs portfolio. Zaidi may be given the status of minister of state for revenue reports The Express Tribune.
Upon elevation, the FBR chairmanship will be awarded to an incumbent bureaucrat, Javed Ghani – a grade 22 officer of the Customs Group – was among front runners for the post, added sources while in conversation to the Express Tribune.
It is pertained to mention here that the government`s economic team has been through frequent shuffle and reshuffle since Prime Minister Imran Khan took the oath. For the first eight months, Asad Umar headed finance ministry while Hammad Azhar was the State Minister for Revenue.
Upon Umar`s departure, the whole economic team was bolted where Shabbar Zaidi was appointed chairman FBR, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh was given the position of Prime Minister`s aide on finance and revenue also known as Special Assitant to the Prime Minister (SAPM).
According to the Express Tribune, PM Imran has given full authority to Shaikh in running affairs of the Revenue Division and Finance Division. After Zaidi`s elevation, he will look after the taxation policies however the upcoming FBR chairman will stick to operational matters such as revenue collection.
Since Zaidi`s appointment as someone who came from the private sector, the government and FBR, in particular, is undergoing through massive changes in revenue related matters. Zaidi is adamant to maximize the documentation of economy.
One such measure to document the economy after Zaidi`s arrival is the CNIC condition which requires traders to make customer`s CNIC as part of the transactional record. Traders, on the other hand, are refusing to do so.
Zaidi`s ultimate objective is to broaden the tax base by increasing the number of tax filers where the government intends to abolish the non-filer regime.
