The first Sikh pilgrims to use Kartarpur border crossing entered Pakistan on Tuesday reports the Express Tribune. The said arrival of pilgrims was confirmed by the Indian high commission.
Visas to the said pilgrims were issued by the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi on July 26. These visas were issued under the framework of Pakistan-India Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines of 1974.
It is pertinent to mention that the government of Pakistan is taking a number of measures to make Kartarpur corridor fully operational later this year at the 550th anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak.
The said corridor will provide visa-free access to Indian Sikh pilgrims to the Gurdwara in Kartarpur Sahib – a small town in Narowal, four kilometers from the Pakistan-India border. The said Gurdwara is of immense importance to Sikhs around the world as Sikhism founder Baba Guru Nanak spent the last 18 years of his life there.
