IHC Moved Against Media Censorship
Islamabad: A petition has been filed in Islamabad High Court against 'media censorship' and 'taking private channels off air' for coverage of opposition politicians as mentioned by the petition reports Dawn.

The petitioner, Mir Aurangzeb stated in his petition, “There is unrest in society during these days and the media is raising a hue and cry for being pressed by the respondents. It has complained that the respondents are not permitting the media to publish or telecast impartial news and press conferences of the opposition leaders.”

The petitioner went on to cite one of the senior-most journalist Hamid Mir`s column pertaining to the same and Shahzeb Khanzada`s program on Geo News which discussed media abstaining from opposition coverage due to censorship concerns.

The petition further added, “the respondents have imposed censorship in the name of press advice and are also trying to pressurize the media through the establishment of media courts”

According to the petition, respondents are penalizing TV channels for coverage of opposition politicians. The said penalty is either enforced through taking the channel off air or pushing it to last numbers.

“The action of the respondents is absolutely illegal, unlawful, unconstitutional and against the principles of natural justice,” the petition argued.

It further urged the honorable Islamabad High Court to declare that the respondents have no lawful authority to censor tv channels for opposition coverage.
