Abbasi’s Arrest Triggers Widespread Condemnation On Social Media
The arrest of PML-N senior vice-president Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has triggered a strong reaction, as Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari said another former democratically-elected prime minister had been arrested, adding that being critical of “the selected government is now treason”.

In another tweet, she said they were still waiting for the arrest of “Selected Imran Khan” over receiving over 65 per cent PTI election fund from Arif Naqvi.

On the other hand, PML-N leader Khawaja Asif described Abbasi as a brave, loyal and honest person who, he said, would be vindicated.

And Ali Dar – son of former finance minister Ali Dar – used satire to comment the depressing political environment.

The images of the arrest of the country’s biggest outlawed outfit PML-N’s senior vice-president Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, he said in a tweet which contained the visuals.

And it is not just the politicians but also journalists who have condemned the move. And Murtaza Solangi is one of them.

“This is good enough to put Shahid Khaqan Abbasi behind bars. Pakistan saved $600m in Qatar LNG deal [the case because of which the former premier is arrested]: Bloomberg,” he said.

Meanwhile, senior journalist Nasim Zehra highlighted another aspect. Describing it as “a bad joke and a crass move in the name of accountability”, she said the only reason for arresting Abbasi is seemingly not his alleged non-cooperation with NAB but to stall opposition’s moves” about the no-confidence motion against Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani and the protest rallies by the PML-N.

She added that the NAB and its supporters were seemed to be on a mission, as they want to push the PML-N into victimhood mode provoking them into some form of resistance. And that’s why accountability process was being used, Nasim said.

Meanwhile, Wasim Abbasi questioned whether the arrest of Abbasi, who enjoys good reputation, will improve NAB’s standing among the people.

But senior journalist Abbas Nasir has Rana Sanaullah in his mind. “So far only news of Khaqan Abbasi's arrest but no heroin recovered from his car. The law-enforcement agencies are faltering in their role.”

Meanwhile, Sheharyar Rizwan says it’s fascism with not even the slightest pretence of due process or fairness.

And people can’t forget the fact that Abbasi is among the top five taxpayers of the country.
