The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has spent Rs439 billion without first seeking the approval of parliament, Express Tribune reported.
The amount spent resulted in a cut of Rs300 billion from the development budget as well as forcing the government to approve an additional Rs106-billion to meet the expenses.
These findings came to light after the government placed the budget documents in the National Assembly too seek the body's ex-post facto approval. According to the documents, in fiscal year 2018-19 ending June 30, the Ministry of Finance issued Rs222 billion worth of technical and regular supplementary grants.
Out of the Rs222 billion, the federal government adjusted Rs116 billion within the budget, including the shifting of Rs24 billion of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects to the schemes recommended by parliamentarians.
The government has sanctioned Rs106 billion in regular supplementary grants for meeting ‘unforeseen’ expenditures, which were not approved by the National Assembly. These included the amount sanctioned for the military and Pakistan Air Force to meet the additional expenditures incurred during the standoff with India.
