Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari, leaders of Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) respectively, two of Pakistan’s major opposition parties, are behind the bars over charges of corruption. The charges of corruption against the two leaders are serious and accountability is a must for a country currently ranked 117th on Global Corruption Index. However, Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir, two members of the National Assembly from Waziristan and the leaders of the rights movement Pashtun Tahafuz Movement are also in jail. They’ve been accused of attacking a military check-post in Kharqamar area of Waziristan but no evidence to prove the same has surfaced as yet. This gives an impression that corruption charges are nothing but eyewash. Those critical of the government or the state’s policies are being persecuted while those in agreement have been given a free pass to do whatever they want to do. As Murtaza Solangi pointed out in his article for Naya Daur, “Regardless of the merits of the case, the fact remains that the same NAB is investigating many other politicians of the ruling coalition while currently all of them remain out of the jail”.
