The Supreme Court on Friday rejected Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lifetime supremo Nawaz Sharif’s plea requesting an extension in six-week bail, which ends on May 7.
The court, in its short order, also rejected a related plea seeking permission for Sharif's treatment in the United Kingdom. The court remarked that Nawaz was given six-weeks medical bail, but it seems like he spent most of the time doing tests.
Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Asif Saeed Khosa remarked that Nawaz was given a six-week bail on medical grounds after a medical board recommended angiography, but the petitioner has exceeded the scope by asking to travel abroad.
The counsel for Nawaz, Khawaja Harris Ahmed, had argued earlier that, according to the written order of the court, his client cannot apply for bail before surrendering himself to the authorities.
Justice Sajjad Ali Shah reminded the council that anything said by judges before signing their verdict is called observation and not a ruling.
On Tuesday, Nawaz filed a petition asking for bail extension citing medical issues. The petition also contended that it was ideal that Nawaz was treated by medical practitioners from the United Kingdom (UK), who were well aware of his case.
All medical reports of the former prime minister were also submitted to the SC along with the application for bail extension.
