Official data from the Election Commission showed Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) winning 303 of the 542 seats, up from 282 it had won in 2014. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has won 351 seats.

The opposition in Congress won 54 seats. In 2014, Congress had 44 seats.

The party or coalition with a simple majority (272 seats) is invited to form the government.

In April, PM Imran Khan had said that there are more chances of peace between India and Pakistan if Narendra Modi returns to power for a second consecutive time.

“Perhaps if the BJP — a right-wing party — wins, some kind of settlement in Kashmir could be reached,” Khan told a small group of foreign journalists in an interview.
