According to a report by Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), at least 3,500 people were robbed off their mobile phones while 2,209 lost their motorbikes in the month of April.
The report states that 113 cars were stolen in Karachi and another 19 were snatched. A total of 2,309 motorcycles were stolen and 137 were snatched at gunpoint. In addition to this, 2,209 mobile phones were stolen and 1,390 were snatched.
Moreover, 2 cases of extortion were reported and 40 people were killed in targeted attacks in Karachi. In the past four months, a total of 434 cars were stolen and 61 were snatched at gunpoint. Furthermore, around 8,250 motorcycles were stolen and 572 snatched.
The surge in crime rates is alarming considering that last month, Pakistan’s financial hub and one of the world’s largest cities went out of the top 10 in the World Crime Index.
During the past 5 years, Karachi has made great progress in combating crime.
In 2014, Karachi was ranked 6th in the World Crime Index, which meant that the metropolis was the city with 6th highest crime rate in the world.
Now, Karachi stands at 70, ranked slightly ahead of London, Washington and Rome.
Director-General (DG) Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor credited the civil administration and the security forces, especially police and Sindh rangers for their valiant efforts. He also lauded the citizens of Karachi.
