Additional Attorney General Zahid Ebrahim has resigned over references against top judges, including Supreme Court's Justice Qazi Faez Isa saying that he 'can not in good conscience continue'.
In a letter written to President Arif Alvi, Ebrahim said that news reports on Tuesday claimed that references were launched against several judges of the Sindh High Court and the Supreme Court over alleged misconduct.
Among those judges, Ebrahim said was a top supreme court judge (Justice Qazi Faiz Isa) who is 'widely known for his unimpeachable integrity and against whom the government has already revealed its mind by filing review petitions'.
Ebrahim said that the references did not aim at probing alleged misconduct but had motives of tarnishing reputations of individuals. He said that the references will cause irreparable damage to the institutions which is the protector of fundamental rights of the Pakistani citizens.
"In light of this, I cannot in good conscience continue in office and hereby tender my resignation as the Additional Attorney General of Pakistan with immediate effect," Ebrahim said.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Maryam Nawaz said that the party strongly condemns 'planned conspiracy' of the government against reputed judges.

The federal government filed references of misconduct against three superior court judges for allegedly hiding properties they own abroad.
According to a report in the Express Tribune, President Arif Alvi has sent a reference of misconduct against the judges that own properties abroad in their own or spouses’ name.
According to another report, Justice Qazi Faez Isa is among the judges against whom the government has filed the references
The said judges include an SC judge who failed to mention a property in his wife’s name in Spain, in his wealth statement.
