Balochistan is the largest province of Pakistan and it is currently going through a drug epidemic. Drugs abuse is rapidly growing in the region, especially amongst the younger generation, while almost five percent of the adult population is also addicted to some form of substance abuse. Drugs are a very big problem in our country, but often they get eclipsed with the other issues plaguing our society like poverty, illiteracy or lack of basic healthcare facilities etc. In Pakistan, around 700 people die of a drug overdose every year, and almost half of these fatalities occur in Balochistan.

Unluckily, drug and narcotics trafficking has become order of the day in Balochistan’s city Turbat where narcotics is being traded publically.

The most addictive drug is Heroin (diacetylmorphine). The rating of Heroin is 3.0. Heroin is a drug that was developed in the 1870s by combining acetyl groups with the molecule morphine. When Heroin is injected to the body it converts into morphine and gives the users a significant psychological and physical high.

According to the report of Islamabad Senate Standing Committee on Interior and Narcotics, around 8 million people in Pakistan are drug addicts while 700 people die every year in the country due to drugs intake. Drug addiction has become an epidemic in Pakistan. The number of drugs user is rising day by day.

0.28 million people used illicit substances in the province in the past year whereas 17,000 drug users are estimated to be injecting drugs. Cannabis was found to be the most commonly used drug (2.8%). Vulnerability to HIV and other blood-borne diseases through injecting drug use is also considerable due to sharing of needles and syringes.

Usually, it is the youngsters who are the most affected by drugs and alcohol. Every individual, no matter where, has been affected by drugs and alcohol in some capacity or the other. Over 23 million people, mostly above 12 years of age, are drug addicts who obviously in turn affect more people around them; like their parents, neighbours, siblings and friends etc.

In Pakistan more than 8 lac people, between the ages of 15-64, are addicted to the use of heroin on a regular basis, as indicated by the US, and this is a shocking number no matter where you are in the world. While America has usually been considered as the country where the maximum volume of heroin is consumed, some estimates suggest that the in Pakistan, around 44 tons of heroin is consumed every year, which is higher than the US.
