To honour the memory of Pakistan’s former minister for Minorities Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti who was shot dead in 2011, the mayor of Canadian City of Brampton has declared March 2nd, 2020 as “Day of Remembrance and Action on Religious Freedom”.
Mayor Patrick Brown issued the proclamation during an official meeting of the City Council of Brampton.
Talking about the slain minister, Brown said that Bhatti was assassinated for his ‘unrelenting opposition to Pakistan's blasphemy laws and the injustices and intolerance they encouraged.”
He paid glowing tributes to Bhatti for defending the “cause to which he had dedicated his life.”
“His untimely and violent death has left the religious minorities of Pakistan, including Canadian Pakistani Christian Community of Brampton in shock, fear and desperation. Christians of Pakistan are worried, feel orphaned and ask ‘Who will raise our voice now”, the mayor added.
The City Council condemned the assassination of Bhatti and all forms of violence against religious minorities around the world and all other forms of racism, hate, xenophobia and bigotry.
The council also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the right to religious freedom and declared that hatred has no place in the City of Brampton.
