SC’s damning indictment of security agencies in Faizabad dharna case comes as a shock to many

“The armed forces and all agencies must never be perceived to support a particular political party, faction or politician”, says SC verdict, also notes that the TLP dharna participants received cash from men in uniform which also furthered the perception of their involvement.

In a scathing judgment, the Supreme Court blamed government, media,

PEMRA, intelligence agencies, armed forces and the Election Commission

for the 2017 Faizabad sit-in by extremist group TLP

The protest had brought Islamabad to a standstill for over 20 days

Justice Qazi Faez Isa remarked that while the dharna leaders were

hurling threats and promoting hatred,

anyone who opposed the government joined in

The judgment also criticizes talk show hosts

for ‘inciting and provoking’ citizens during the violent protests

This undue attention made a little known group

like TLP into a phenomenon

The verdict further says the DG ISPR should not comment on political matters

which furthered the ‘perception of their involvement’

The ISI report submitted to the SC was declared

unsatisfactory as it did not disclose the “source of livelihood,

place of work, address, funding of organisations, et cetera” of the TLP leadership

The ECP’s failure to account for TLP’s funds

and election expenses was also condemned by the apex cour
