Former British Army major, educator and World War II veteran Geoffrey Langlands, who spent majority of his life in Pakistan educating the country's generations, passed away today at the age of 101 in Lahore.
Langlands was born in 1917 in Hull, England. In January 1944, Langlands arrived in British India as an army volunteer on a troop carrier and worked three years as part of the selection board for officers training in Bangalore.
After the partition of the sub-continent, Langlands decided to stay in Pakistan, where he moved to Rawalpindi and joined the Pakistan Army. He also served the country during the 1947 Indo-Pak.
From then, Langlands has been in Pakistan, mainly Chitral, working to improve the standards of education. He was an instructor in the Pakistan Army, while he also taught at Aitchison College for around 25 years before moving to Chitral.
In Chitral, he took charge of the Sayurj Public School, which was later renamed Langlands School and College in his honour.
The news of his demise has saddened the country as people are paying homage to Pakistan's great friend. In fact, the country mourns the death of Pakistan's very own.
