‘I’m done’: Pakistanis react to PTI’s ‘Gunnah tax’ on cigarettes

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has broke a very bad news for all the smokers across the country with their latest move. The ruling party has decided to impose tax on cigarettes, which is perfectly fine, but have proposed a very unusual name for it.

As per PTI's new policy, every time you go out and buy a pack of cigarettes, 'GUNNAH' TAX will be imposed on you. Yes, you read that right.



Federal Minister for National Health Services Aamer Mehmood Khan announced during Annual Public Health Conference that “We are sending a sin tax bill in the National Assembly in which taxes would be imposed on cigarettes and tobacco products.”

Pakistanis are OKAY with tax being imposed on cigarettes and tobacco products. But naming it 'Gunnah' tax? That's a big NO.

Imposing tax on cigarettes is not something new. Previous governments have also taken similar steps to discourage smoking. What’s problematic is the term ‘Gunnah' tax and one PTI member himself feels it is ‘inappropriate’.

Literal translations never work and the 'Gunnah' tax fiasco has proved it once again. Let's just keep it to 'Sin' tax or Health tax or Any-other tax that does not stir controversy.

Because let's be honest, PTI can not afford to make things any worse.
