Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry on Monday warned that lifting lockdown completely without ensuring the implementation of SOPs could be ‘dangerous’ for Pakistan, following Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Gulzar Ahmed’s directives to reopen shopping malls across the country.

The minister took to Twitter to inform people that a committee comprising experts at the Ministry of Science and Technology have stressed upon three points related to the Covid-19 pandemic. He said the experts have forecasted that the Covid-19 cases would peak by mid-June.

“Herd immunity could be disastrous for Pakistan, any such policy to counter the deadly coronavirus shall not be adopted at all,” Fawad Chaudhry said. He said that experts also believed that coronavirus is not just a flu but far more complicated than that.

“Lockdown should not be lifted without prior safety precautions. The only way forward is Prime Minister Imran Khan’s idea of smart lockdown,” he added.

On Monday, CJP Gulzar, while hearing the suo motu case on the coronavirus crisis, directed the federal and provincial governments to allow markets and shopping malls to remain open during the weekends as well till Eid-ul-Fitr.

Last week, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced the government’s decision to lift the Covid-19-induced lockdown, saying that the novel coronavirus was here to stay and the nation would have to learn to live with it.
