Supreme Court (SC)’s three-judge bench on Wednesday said that Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was responsible for the spread of coronavirus in the country. SC has allowed Air Marshal Arshad Malik to resume his duties as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of national flag carrier PIA.

According to a news report published in DAWN, SC’s bench headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed asked the PIA management to furnish a thorough business plan and different business contracts the airline had entered into with international organisations.

Arshad Malik had approached SC bench against the decision of Sindh High Court (SHC), that restrained him from functioning as CEO of PIA on Dec 23 last year. The petitioner had argued before SHC that Arshad Malik was a senior serving officer of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and his appointment as the PIA chief was made in utter disregard of the law laid down by the apex court in its Aug 3, 2018 judgement against the appointment of the then CEO.

During the hearing, the chief justice also regretted and said the country’s airports as well as the PIA were responsible for the spread of novel coronavirus. But the government did nothing to contain the spread rather courts were asked to close and suspend the functioning of judicial work in the country, the chief justice regretted.

Arshad Malik was allowed to continue performing as the head of the national flag carrier, when Attorney General Khalid Jawed Khan assured the apex court that he was ready to submit in writing regarding the continuity of the present CEO, adding that he would not be recalled by the PAF any time soon.
