Earlier today, a senior member of the Geo News and Jung Group, Arshad Waheed tweeted about the threats that they have been receiving during the protest camp held in Rawalpindi, against the arrest of the group's head Mir Shakilur Rehman.

Journalists and media persons have joined hands in protest against the arrest that they have termed an act of political victimisation. According to him, the bullets that were thrown at them from the Vigo were a threat and an implicit message to silence their protests against the state.

In March, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) had expressed concern over the arrest of Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). According to the HRCP, the human rights watchdog was of the view that there is a strong suspicion that the arrest of the media mogul is politically motivated.

The HRCP account also claimed in its tweets that the arrest is being seen by journalists as an attack on press freedoms.

Owner of Geo-Jang group Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman has been arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a case pertaining to the purchase of a 45-kanal piece of land. The matter dates back over three decades.

NAB has claimed that former PM Nawaz Sharif had given the said piece of land to Rahman in 1986.
