Two Electrocuted To Death As Flooding Wreaks Havoc In Karachi

At least two people lost their lives to electrocution as Karachi braved flooding and power outages following rain in one of the hottest days in decades on Friday.

A police constable was electrocuted in Ibrahim Hyderi area of the metropolis, while another person was electrocuted following rains and flooding, according to media reports. The flooding once again raised questions on the performance of the provincial government, which has earlier been warned about it by the experts.

Karachi yesterday witnessed one its hottest days as temperature soared to 42 degrees Celsius. The rain that started with a drizzle soon turned into a heavy downpour, with the Meteorological Department predicting, another spell in approximately 20 hours.

There were no officials seen at the sites of the flooding on main thoroughfares and roads, forcing the residents to remain stranded. Shahra-e-Faisal, Korangi Road, Punjab Chowrangi, Defence, Clifton and Old City area were seen flooded. The Jinnah Hospital was also seen submerged in water, causing agony for the patients and the staff.

Commuters were seen pushing their vehicles and motorcycles after being stranded by gushing water. Some poles and tree were also uprooted, leading to temporary closures. A wall collapsed on parked vehicles, damaging many of them badly. Traffic wardens at one of the flooded roads continued with their duties, receiving praise from the commuters.

The K-Electric resorted to power outages, mainly blaming it on the rains. According to the official notification, feeders in some areas had been shut down for 'safety purposes.' Many areas of the city started to experience outages, continuing on Saturday.

The outages were carried out in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Hassan Square, Federal B Area, Shahra-e-Faisal, Saddar, Orangi, Korangi, Malir, , PIB, Surjani Town, Mahmoodabad, Lyari, Baldia Town and Clifton.
