US President Donald Trump has signed the Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act, which makes it mandatory for USAID to give at least 50 per cent of its higher education scholarships to women in Pakistan.

Under the Malala Yousafzai Act, USAID will award at least 50 per cent of its merit based higher education scholarships for Pakistan to women. After President Trump’s signature the Act is now a law.

A statement issued by the White House read: “On Jan. 13, the president signed into law the Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act, which directs the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to award at least 50 percent of Merit and Needs-Based Scholarship Program scholarships to Pakistani women.”

The Nobel laureate has been trying to expand USAID’s scholarship program for Pakistan that has since 2010 awarded 6000 scholarships to women in Pakistan. With this new act, the number is bound to rise up and give opportunities to many young women in Pakistan who couldn’t pursue their education due to financial reasons.
