A 32-year-old Columbia University law professor, Lina Khan has been critical of powerful technology companies.
She was confirmed by the US Senate on a 69-28 vote. Hours after her confirmation, she was sworn in as the chairperson of the FTC.
Observers have said that the development is significant because a vocal critic of Big Tech will serve as a top federal regulator at a time when the industry is being pressured by Congress, regulators and state attorneys general. It is being considered a tough stance towards tech giants Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple.
US media reported that Lina had told a Senate committee in April that she was "worried about the way tech companies could use their power to dominate new markets".
