PM Imran To Co-Convene First Ever Global Refugee Forum

Prime Minister Imran Khan will be co-convening the first Global Refugee Forum (GRF), which is be held on December 17 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Foreign Office released a statement on Monday which said that the GRF would be co-hosted by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Switzerland.

The statement added that Prime Minister Imran Khan, Turkish President Erdogan, and leaders from Costa Rica, Ethiopia and Germany had been invited to co-convene the event. The leaders who have been chosen to co-convene are those whose countries have played an exemplary role for the protection and well-being of refugees.

The FO statement also said that the forum is expected to gather support and solidarity from states, international organisations, private sector organisations on how to deal with the increasing number of refugees.

The Foreign Office said that the prime minister would be giving Pakistan’s perspective, experience and contribution for the Afghan refugees.

Moreover, the prime minister is also expected to engage in bilateral interactions with his counterparts at the forum and with the UN leadership. He would also be attending a luncheon hosted by the UN secretary general.

The GRF would be the first major forum on refugees of the 21st century. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres would also address the event.
