Retired Brigadier Asad Munir on Friday allegedly committed suicide over “harassment by National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

In a suicide note circulating on social media, allegedly written by Asad Munir and addressed to the chief justice of Pakistan, he said that “a reference has been filed against me by the anti-graft body over the restoration of a plot back in 2008 but it was restored by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) chairman”.

Munir, who was also a member of the CDA, wrote that: “The NAB has made my life miserable; the authority has placed my name on Exit Control List and initiated three investigations and two inquiries against me in just a year”.

“I have already submitted my asset details,” the note said.

“I am further committing suicide to avoid humiliation, being handcuffed and paraded in front of the media.”

The note also urged the chief justice to take notice of conduct of the NAB officials “so that other government officials are not convicted for the crimes they have not committed”.

In the wake of Asad Munir’s death, people have urged that an action must be initiated against NAB officers and its chairman should also resign.

The anti-graft body has been accused of harassing the people under probe several times. The Supreme Court has also issued an order, barring the NAB officials from harassing people.

NAB has been accused of harassment by Metro bus project contractors, Karachi Metropolitan Cooperation officials, Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP). Last year, all government officials had also protested against the authority’s alleged misuse of power and harassment.

NAB has also been accused by the Pakistan People’s Party of harassment during its fake accounts case probe.

NAB has also come under fire when its officers paraded handcuffed Punjab University former Vice-Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran and four teachers of the university in front of the media.

The Supreme Court had taken notice of the matter and ordered the authority’s chairman to probe into the matter.

Politicians, including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif and party’s President Shehbaz Sharif, have also accused NAB of harassment.
