Teaching of the Holy Quran with translation has been made mandatory for all university students in Punjab. A notification from Governor Secretariat issued in this regard stated that the students who do not study the holy Quran with translation would not be eligible to receive degree.

The notification further says that students in universities all over the province will be taught the Holy Quran with translation. The teaching of the Holy Quran will be separate from the compulsory subject of Islamiat which is already taught in universities.

Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar said that implementation of the teachings of the Holy Quran are a source of success in the world and the hereafter.

Sarwar expressed these views while addressing a press conference following his meeting with vice-chancellors of the universities at the Governor’s House.

About the decision, the governor tweeted: “the historical decision to teach the Quran with Urdu translation has been implemented. This would be a compulsory subject in universities of Punjab without which a degree won’t be awarded”.

Terming the holy book a complete code of life, he said that its better understanding would help people be closer to God. He urged the universities to include the teaching of the Quran in their syllabi and said that it was their duty to disseminate knowledge of the Quran to the younger generation. The governor also announced that the Constitution would be amended to make teaching of translation of the Holy Quran mandatory for all students.
