Human Rights Ministry Issues Annual Report For 2020

At a media engagement session in Islamabad today, the Ministry of Human Rights unveiled is annual performance report for the year 2020. Federal Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari highlighted the progress made by the ministry in its work. The annual report sheds light on efforts undertaken by the Ministry to protect vulnerable groups in Pakistani society, including women, children and transgender individuals.

Minister Mazari spoke of initiatives such as the Zainab Alert system, which mobilizes the state machinery at regional and district levels for protection and recovery of missing children, achieved through integration with the Pakistan Citizen’s Portal. Another initiative which the Ministry highlighted was the 1099 helpline and related app which are meant to provide assistance to victims of domestic abuse and help report on instances of violence against women. Minister Mazari also referred to legislation meant to curb child labour, the Anti-Rape (Investigation and Trial) Ordinance 2020 and the ICT Rights of Persons with Disability Act among other initiatives.

The event also featured a briefing based on its efforts in the context of the Coronavirus pandemic, including a comprehensive report titled “COVID-19 and Disaster Vulnerabilities in Pakistan: A human rights based analysis.”
