A Pakistan Air Force (PAF) F-16 aircraft crashed in Islamabad on Wednesday, during rehearsals for the March 23 Pakistan Day parade.

Rumors circulating on social media say that Wing commander Numan Akram, officer commanding the 9-SQN has died in the accident. However, Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari on his Twitter handle said that she has heard a news of pilot ejecting himself. "Praying this new report of pilot ejecting is correct," she added.

DAWN newspaper reported that an air force spokesperson has confirmed the PAF plane crash near Shakarparian in Islamabad. According to a statement released by PAF, a board of inquiry has been ordered by Air Headquarters to determine the cause of accident.

The statement, however, made no mention of the pilots of the aircraft. “We are ascertaining the losses,” a PAF spokesman told Reuters by phone. Meanwhile, rescue teams have been dispatched towards the site of the crash.

It was the third PAF training aircraft to have crashed while on a routine training mission in less than two months.
