The complainant in the case, Badar Rasheed is an ex-member of Pakistan Tehreek Insaaf (PTI) he has been previously charged for the possession of illegal weapons and contested election for a union council chairman post on a PTI ticket. However, PTI has denied any links to the complainant. Earlier this week Federal Minister Fawad Chaudry had claimed that the prime minister had no information about registration of FIR against Nawaz Sharif. He had stated that any citizen could register an FIR in this country and when the prime minister was informed of it, he had expressed his displeasure.

An FIR was registered earlier this week by Badar Rasheed against Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir on various charges which included section 124-A (sedition), section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 121-A (conspiracy to wage war against Pakistan) of the Pakistan Penal Code. According to the FIR, Nawaz Sharif is carrying out a planned conspiracy to defame the country from his home in London. It also stated that through his speeches, Nawaz Sharif has attempted to isolate Pakistan in front of the International community.  The PML-N had rejected all allegations made in the FIR.
