In his letter to the Indian Election Commission, ex-Navy chief Admiral (Retd) Ram Das raised suspicion over Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s behavior. Das said that the Indian armed forces have always been an independent, non-political and secular institution but BJP’s antics were spreading extremist rhetoric in the ranks.

On the Balakot attack, Das said that it was aimed at pleasing voters. “The Balakot attack was carried out to please voters and the Indian Air Force was utterly misused. Airstrikes in Balakot are against the IAF’s mandate,” Das said.
Das also urged the election commission to take necessary steps to ensure that no political party uses or promotes war to their political advantage. He said the ruling political party must also be stopped from politicizing the armed forces or ‘it will lit a fire that will burn everyone’.

Situation between Pakistan and India is tense ever since the Pulwama Attack, in which 44 Indian paramilitary soldiers were killed when a van packed with explosives rammed into a convoy in occupied-Kashmir.
Last week on Tuesday, Indian fighter jets entered Pakistan’s airspace and dropped payload near Balakot during hasty escape after they were chased down by Pakistan Air Force (PAF) jets. On Wednesday, two Indian jets again violated Pakistan’s airspace but were shot down by Pakistan.
Wind Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was arrested but released two days later on Friday as peace gesture.
