Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to leave the country for London on Sunday for specialised medical treatment.

The Interior Ministry has been sent a notice in this regard by the National Accountability Bureau for Nawaz’s name to be removed from the Exit Control List.

Sources have informed media that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s supreme leader Nawaz Sharif would also be accompanied by his brother Shahbaz Sharif and his grandson Junaid Safdar.

Sources stated that the travel plans of the former prime minister may vary owing to the removal of his name from the Exit Control List.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Political Affairs Naeemul Haq informed media the government had no issue if Nawaz Sharif flies abroad for treatment. He added, “Now, it’s for the court to decide whether to give Nawaz one-time or two-time permission to travel abroad for treatment.”

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that the federal government would allow Nawaz Sharif to leave the country for medical treatment in the United Kingdom, but warned Nawaz Sharif from seeking a second period of exile to escape charges of corruption.

In an interview with media, the foreign minister stated, “Doctors are recommending that he perhaps needs to go abroad for further examination. The prime minister has said everything possible should be done to show his life is protected.”

Sources have also informed media that Maryam Nawaz, after applying for her passport, would also be going to London to be with her sick father. However, Nawaz won’t be delaying his trip to wait for her.

Nawaz’s family doctor has said that it was premature to say anything about Nawaz’s departure considering the fact that his name had not been removed from the ECL.

According to sources in NAB, the former premier has been granted one-time permission to fly abroad. The decision has been sent to the interior ministry, and following its approval Nawaz’s name would be removed from the ECL.
