PIA CEO Says National Airline Losing 6 Billion Every Month

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has been making a loss of Rs 6 billion every month since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, CEO Air Marshal Arshad Malik told Prime Minister Imran Khan at a meeting on Tuesday.

The meeting was held to discuss reforms and restructuring in the national airlines. Senior government officials including Federal Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Information and Broadcasting Minister Senator Shibli Faraz, Advisor to PM on Reforms Dr. Ishrat Hussain, Special Assistant Lt Gen (r) Asim Salim Bajwa, were also part of the meeting.

PIA CEO presented a plan about expected reforms and restructuring at the meeting.

He also told those present that PIA spent Rs 24 billion in salaries to its 14,500 employees every year. He gave updates about investigations and other matters in the recent plane crash in Karachi.

The prime minister addressed the meeting, saying that the economy was taking a plunge and that its effects will be most severely felt by the masses. He said that PIA needed to adopt a policy of austerity and also to focus on increasing its income and financial resources to upgrade its fleet of airplanes. He said that the national airlines needed to focus on its domestic and foreign assets to generate income so as to shift its burden from the general public.
