Ubisoft has been working on the Assassin’s Creed franchise for the past 11 years. They have had a lot of ups and downs. Their first live action AC film bombed at the box office after getting negative reviews from critics and fans. It was understandable that they needed to take a new approach towards the franchise and they did with Assassin’s Creed Origin. It was a fresh take. The combat mechanics were refined, the character models were more detailed and the Egyptian setting was visually beautiful. They were back on track with the game series. After the games release they announced the sequel to Origin which was titled ‘Odyssey’.

After the ‘Origins’ fans worried if the sequel would be a total rip off of its previous installment. Now that it’s out, here’s the review:

Pros:

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is definitely a big improvement when it comes to visuals. It’s more colorful and does an amazing job with the tone of the story by giving the water mechanics more life and placing historical sites all over the map for the player to visit.

The setting of ancient Greece was a good move. It’s a prequel sequel to origins and it gives a more in-depth look at the world Ubisoft has been building.

It’s a RPG (role playing game). You get to choose between two characters. Although both characters’ story arcs are similar, it’s still fun to be able to have the character in complete control with major decisions in the game.

The gameplay is fun and fast paced and you wouldn’t want anything less from a game that’s called ‘Assassin’s Creed’.  Each weapon has its own mechanics and you get to build up your skills with every level you achieve (just like origin).

Cons:

The story is decent but not exciting enough for the player to keep track with. It has a lot of pacing issues and sometimes lacks character development. There comes a point in the story where you start to see that the choices presented to you have the same outcomes and no real consequences which makes the RPG mechanic useless.

The animal mechanics and AI are the worst part of the game. They don’t function well throughout the game. They have a linear path if they are moved from their path they restore themselves in the same environment or start glitching. You will also see a few downgrades in texture and lighting when it comes to the environment.

The game punishes you for leveling up at times. Sometimes you can’t even defeat your enemies that have a lower XP level than you. It’s frustrating and causes you to take a different path to your objectives.

Conclusion:

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is flawed but it’s better than most installments in the series and will give you the fun experience you are looking for. The game still gives you a unique adventure to go on with great combat mechanics and beautiful visuals. You will want to sit down and sync yourself with the character you choose to play with.  It is worth the buy and most importantly worth your time.
So the verdict is 8/10
