Quetta: Police beat up and arrested more than 150 doctors and medical staff on Monday for protesting against the non-availability of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during their fight against the deadly coronavirus.

According to the President Young Doctors Association Dr Yasir Khan, the doctors have been front-line warriors in dealing with the spread of the virus and the least the government can do is ensure their protection. They set out to protest in front of the Chief Minister House but were beaten up and injured by the police.

Earlier, the doctors have had to crowd fund their basic needs for PPE because the health ministry had yet not stepped in.

The police said that the doctors have been arrested for the violation of Section 144, and sent to different police stations.

The Young Doctors Association has boycotted their duties to protest the police action announcing that they would not work until preventive measures are extended towards them.

In Balochistan, reportedly, more than a dozen doctors have been tested positive for the virus already and a total number of 192 patients still suffer.

Liaquat Shahwani, the spokesperson for Balochistan government has said that the medical kits that involve PPE have been distributed among doctors and paramedics.

He claimed that more than 50,000 N-95 masks from National Disaster Management Authority Pakistan have been distributed among the staff so far.
