Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Parliamentary Party Leader Sherry Rehman on Wednesday criticised the government for not considering her bill on child marriage in National Assembly (NA)’s agenda.

The senator while sarcastically welcoming two Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ministers, including Shafqat Mahmood in Senate criticised the ruling party, as it has not even considered her bill on child marriage in NA’s agenda to date, knowing the fact that it was passed in senate with consensus.

The former minister also questioned, “if the government is so keen to counter human rights violations in Pakistan – ‘which is appreciable’, then why it has been ignoring my bill on child marriage for so long."

Earlier, Sherry Rehman had presented the Child Marriage Restraint Act 1929 in Senate to eradicate the practice of child marriage from Pakistan. Subsequently in April last year, the upper house of parliament passed the bill, fixing 18 years as the minimum age for girls to get married.
