A religious group held a protest in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s district of Charsadda, demanding the removal of Bacha Khan University’s vice chancellor whilst invoking his Shia sect.

The protest was held by a religious group near Farooq Azam Chowk of the city, wherein protesters engaged in hate speech pertaining to the sect of the vice chancellor. They also threatened to widen the scope of their protests and hold a protest in front of the Bacha Khan University if the VC was not removed.

The protesters invoked the sect of the vice chancellor while putting forth their demands, and said that the vice chancellor belonged to the Shia school of thought, which was unacceptable to them.

A local journalist told Naya Daur that the group had held a conference prior to the protest in which it had decided that Bacha Khan University’s VC Saqlain Naqvi be removed from the university or it will hold strong protests.

He added that police did not take action in response to these threats or the hate speech the group engaged in during the conference.

A professor of the university told Naya Daur on the condition of anonymity that there was a group of people within the university who wanted the vice chancellor removed and were using the religious group against the VC.
